RAFAEL MILCUSZEK
Roadrunner
The artist’s vision for The Roadrunner is a continuing process, in itself. The objective was to give movement and life to, what was originally, the crown of a Black Walnut tree, grown in central North America. Nearly a symmetrical crown, quite rare in its shape, the wood had to be harvested from the tip of the tree, and stored in its bark for three years before the work was started.
In this work of subtractive art, pieces were shaved off with hand held machines, according to the final vision of the artist. By the time of completion, the freeform shape of the wood became unified with the primary visualization.
Its smooth, continuous curves and defined posture suggests a subtle erotic presence. Through the creation of this piece, the artist utilized the method of subtraction, by means of defining movement, shape and emotion. The Roadrunner is a sculpted image of speed, direction, and eloquence with a sense of living energy.
